I remember reading all the PC magazines and learning about the "secrets" of windows - some of which were basically just general know-how but there were some hidden stuff too! Like the volcano screen-saver and pifmgr.dll -the latter works to this day, amazingly!

Good times. Despite all the criticism, windows stood the test of time but when something gets accepted in this way I can't help but ask: Would there be an entirely different way to do what modern UI does with the hardware that we have?

If there is, how would it have evolved in terms of software and hardware?
